Pretoria today is a mix of ultra-modern architecture and stately old buildings dating from its days as the capital of the Transvaal Republic. It is a pretty city - its gardens and trees flourish in the fertile, well-watered soil of the Apies river valley - and springtime brings the spectacle of tens of thousands of flowering jacaranda trees.

This mix of modern and historic is also found in many places of interest in the city. The visitor will find a variety of museums that preserve relics of days gone by, and also fascinating glimpses of up-to-minute scientific and industrial developments. Over weekends residents have easy access to the surrounding countryside, where highveld meets lowveld along the ridge of the Magaliesberg, and rivers and lakes offer lovely settings in which to relax. More about Pretoria.
